Has this ever happened to you? You are away at summer camp, or maybe you’re visiting your grandma. The first week goes by, you’re having so much fun, and then you realize – you haven’t pooped! You became (drum roll, please) CONSTIPATED!
- A condition in which a person – or animal – has difficulty in eliminating solid waste, also known as fecal matter, also known as poop
- Shocked dismay: a feeling of alarm, confusion, or feeling bummed out, often caused by something unexpected – like not being able to poop!
You may be wondering, “What in the world does this can’t-poop talk have to do with my pelvis?” We are so glad you asked!
It’s all about the straining, the push-push-pushing and the consternation. When your PFM – Pelvic Floor Muscles – are in good shape, they help you stay in control of both urination and bowel movements. Over time, if your muscles became weak due to trying so hard to poop, you may start to experience pee and poop when you least expected it, and before you could get to the bathroom.
How to Avoid It
When it comes to constipation, the best nourishment for your beautiful bod is fiber and water. Eating foods such as beans, oats, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and raw fruits and vegetables can help keep the path to elimination clear. Drinking plenty of water each and every day will help keep you and your insides well-hydrated, too.
Not exercising and moving your body is another reason people get constipated. Think about how much physical activity you do each day. If you’re not moving, then get moving. (It will help those bowels get moving, too.) Even a simple stretch from side to side can loosen things up. You can also try things like relaxing in the bathroom when you have to go. Slow down! Read a book; listen to music; sing a whole song. You’ll be amazed at what can happen when you give your body a little time to respond.
